The Greene Works Project Announces Debut Performance, Dance on the Edge
July 13, 2014 at Tri-C Eastern Campus Main Theatre
CLEVELAND, OH (June 24, 2014) –The Greene Works Project presents the debut concert Dance on the Edge at Tri-C Eastern Campus, Main Theater on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at 4:00p.m. The concert will introduce the 2014 company members of The Greene Works Project along with special guests Verb Ballets, Dancing Wheels and the Urban Dance Collective of the Cleveland School of the Arts. The program will showcase the works of Terence Greene with guest choreographers Crystal Frazier and Antonio Brown.
Terence Greene is the Director of Dance at the Cleveland School of the Arts and the CEO/Artistic Director of The Greene Works Project. Greene was awarded and honored to be apart of the “Prestigious Creative Workforce Fellows” in 2014 through the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture of Cuyahoga County (CPAC). Greene is also the Vice President of The Cleveland Dance Movement and is heading the committee to host the 27th International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference (IABD) in Cleveland, OH, January 2015.
Greene’s vision is to present an afternoon that takes dance beyond preconceived notions by putting together a program that moves quickly to bring a mix of classical, modern, African and street dance. This show is a culmination of his award through CPAC to advance his artistic dream to develop a contemporary dance company that is enriched in the black tradition. Greene wants to celebrate the beauty and power of universal movement to bring people together. Works on the program include:
Breathe (2010)
Audiences will be taken on a journey to explore the implications of breath that brings life inspired by God. Commissioned in 2010 by Verb Ballet, since then, Greene has then evolved the movement for his new ensemble to take it to a new level. Greene says, “Breath should never be taken for granted because we never know when we will take our final exhale.”
The Gathering (2009)
Verb Ballets will perform The Gathering (2009) choreographed by Terence Greene that explores relationships and the value of family. The work was commissioned while Greene was an Artist-in-Residence at Verb Ballets in 2009.
Exodus (2014)
The company will present the world premiere of Exodus by Antonio Brown, a dancer with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and Cleveland School of the Arts graduate. The full ensemble work is inspired by the Book of Exodus exploring the concept of finding strength to escape slavery and following faith to find peace.
Mandela (2014)
The company will present the world premiere of Mandela choreographed by Crystal Frazier, principal dancer with Rennie Harris Puremovement and the former Co-Founder of Montazh Performing Arts Company in Philadelphia, PA. The premiere work is a tribute to Nelson Mandela and honors his impact on social justice, his legacy to promote peace, human rights and democracy.
Legacy (2012)
Greene created Legacy on Dancing Wheels in 2012 to honor Artistic Director Mary Verdi-Fletcher’s contributions to the dance world. The work was described by The Plain Dealer as, “heavy on ritual...with Verdi-Fletcher holding court as the ensemble executes patterns of frenetic animation mixing modern, African and balletic elements.” The ensemble will be doing excerpts of the ballet performed by Dancing Wheels featuring Verdi-Fletcher and students from the Cleveland School of the Arts.
Reflections of (2010)
Reflections of was choreographed by Greene originally as a duet for Michael Medcalf and himself which originally premiered on Verb Ballets concert in 2010. The interplay of the piece exposes the emotional layers of a relationship between teacher and student. This work will be performed by Michael Greene, dancer with Dayton Contemporary Dance and Lloyd Boyd, alumni of Cleveland School of the Arts and recent graduate of UNCSA, North Carolina School of the Arts.
Faith (2005)
The full ensemble work Faith will close the show! Created in memory of Greene’s mother, Sue Ann Greene, she was his inspiration and greatest motivator. Set to gospel music by Daryl Coley, Cece.
