Presidential Budget Cuts Worry Community Developers

The proposed Presidential Budget for 2011 carries some severe funding cuts for federally funded projects.
Included in those cuts are community-service block grants - proposed to be cut by half. Local administrators of those dollars are considerably concerned.

Connie Krauss is Director of the Summit County Department of Economic Development.
She says the county was counting on more than two million dollars, but without it would have to shelve several ongoing projects.
"We work with Habitat 4 Humanity, we work with NDC out of Portage Co, we've done a lot for housing for low and moderate income people. We have a program to help younger people or people who are trying to get into their first home with down payment assistance - that all goes away."
Additional cuts to projects with Northeast Ohio ties include Pell grants for needy college students, and a multistate Great Lakes cleanup project, which would lose one-quarter of its requested $475 million dollars.
