There were four Republican congressional seats Democrats hoped to capture in Ohio and when all was said and done, they gained two: Democrat John Boccieri defeated Republican Kirk Shuring for the open seat in the 16th district long held by republican Ralph Regula, and Democrat Steven Dreihaus nabbed the first district's seat from Republican incumbent Steven Chabot.
The other two hotly contested seats remained in republican hands. In district 2, Jean Schmidt had a solid win over democratic challenger Victoria Wells Wulsin, and by a narrower margin, Steve Stivers claimed the open seat vacated by Republican Deborah Pryce from his democratic challenger Mary Jo Kilroy.
Last night's two democratic gains means that among Ohio's 18 representatives, there are now an equal number of democrats and republicans.
Nationwide, Democrats have gained at least 18 additional seats in the House, and five in the Senate.
