Mayor Plusquellic took a cue from Governor Strickland's state-of-the-state speech yesterday and made a bold education proposal of his own. He wants to pay for additional education for any resident who graduates from an Akron High school.
Plusquellic: "Imagine the results of a program that provides every child who graduated from an Akron public high school with the opportunity for a college degree at the University of Akron."
The Akron Plan 21st Century would pay for college or technical school. Plusquellic says he wants businesses and anonymous philanthropists to fund a local endowment. But he's not coming to the table empty handed, to get things started he said he wants to sell the city sewer system, which he thinks will go for as much as 250 million dollars.
Plusquellic also announced plans to form an incubator for biomedical businesses. As for recent successes, he touted an increase in downtown housing, the Akron U expansion, and convincing Goodyear to stay in Akron and build a new corporate headquarters. He said the city is trying just as hard to keep Bridgestone-Firestone from relocating its technical operations from Akron to North Carolina or Tennessee.
