Confetti canons and triumphal music music filled the air at East 40th and Euclid, the site of a future stop on RTA's new Silver Line, which is scheduled to go into service next year. That project, along with other system improvements formed the basis for the award from the American Public Transportation Association. What tipped things in RTA's favor, according to APTA president Bill Millar, was: a steady ridership increase... A low accident record... and holding the line against rising fares.
Bill Millar: Yesterday, when I got on the rapid transit, I paid only 1.75. Last week, I paid 2.00 in NYC. In Washington D.C., I pay 2.50 for my daily commute on the Washington Metro.
Although RTA did recently announce a fare hike, Millar noted it was the first one in 13 years -- a record for anywhere else in the country. David C. Barnett, 90.3.
