Frye had been the starting quarterback for one full season for the Browns. In Sunday's opening day match-up with the Steelers, Frye got the team off to a poor start, and was yanked out in the second quarter and replaced by Derek Anderson.
Browns General Manager Phil Savage said yesterday Frye's performance that game sparked the trade.
Phil Savage: In his 10 attempts, he took five sacks. In Derek's 28 attempts, he took 1 sack. And, I think that was probably the most revealing stat if there is one in regards to the game on Sunday.
Savage says Frye was in a tough spot with changes in coordinators, but stressed the quarterback position was always an open competition based on performance. The new QB roster includes Derek Anderson, rookie Brady Quinn, and newly-signed Ken Dorsey.
The plan is to have veteran Dorsey mentor Quinn, who the team envisions as a franchise quarterback. But, critics have questioned why Quinn, a first round pick in this year's draft, hasn't played yet. Savage says the team won't start Quinn yet because he needs more practice and experience.
Phil Savage: The important thing in the big picture and that's a difficult part for people to grasp is that we develop Brady Quinn in the right way.
Derek Anderson will start Sunday for the Browns game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He will be the 7th starting quarterback since the team returned to Cleveland in 1999.
