Oil Spill in Solon

The Environmental Protection Agency calls Sunday's oil spill a large, significant spill. It says the fire at Erico International caused 100,000 gallons of oil and water to flood the facility's basement and spill into a nearby tributary of Tinker's Creek, which feeds the Cuyahoga River.

Reginald Brown, an Emergency Responder for the Ohio EPA, says if rain arrives in the next 24 hours, it could overflow the earthen barriers EPA has established to hold the spill.

Reginald Brown: As well as we have it contained in the creek we can't hold back water so if enough water comes through the tributary it's going to cause the oil to get moved downstream and we're trying to avoid that.

Brown says he plans to check area groundwater tomorrow for contamination. Results of a full chemical analysis of the spill should be available in about a week. Lisa Ann Pinkerton, 90.3.
