60-year-old Terry Gasper had planned to retire a year and a half ago and live the good life at a Florida condo. The trouble is, prosecutors argued that condo was just one of the many gifts Gasper accepted from brokers in return for investment business by the state of Ohio. The two Cleveland area brokers in that case, Daniel O'Neil and Michael Lewis were acquitted but over a dozen people were found guilty of bribes or money laundering - including Republican fundraiser Tom Noe. Gasper agreed to invest $50 million of state money in Noe's rare coin fund. Noe was convicted of stealing about a quarter of that money. One un-named broker is still being investigated.
Prosecutors wanted Gasper to pay back all the money he made but his attorney argued his client had cooperated in the investigation and should not have to pay restitution. He was fined $60,000. He apologized to his children in court and said he didn't intend to commit a crime and never solicited anything from anyone. Later in Columbus Gasper was sentenced on state charges to five years in prison. He'll serve at that at the same time as the federal sentence.
