National City is already in eight states. That will jump to nine after it acquires MAF bancorp of Illinois. MAF is the holding company for MidAmerica Bank - the 11th largest in Chicago. National City already has a presence in the windy city but combined with MidAmerica it doubles its branches there become the the 4th largest bank in the market. The deal also gives National City a presence for the first time in Wisconsin with two dozen branches in Milwaukee. National City Chairman Dave Daberko said the acquisition gives them access to a growth market like Chicago they were looking. MAF stockholders will get National City stock. The total transaction is valued at $1.9 billion.
