Voters in Northeast Ohio turned incumbent board member Deborah Owens-Fink out of office in favor of former congressman Tom Sawyer. Owens-Fink supported a science curriculum that challenged the scientifically-accepted theory of evolution. Sawyer was recruited to challenge Owens-Fink by an organization of academics led by Case Western Physics Professor Lawrence Krauss. The current board removed critical analysis from the curriculum following a Pennsylvania court ruling last year that banned teaching of intelligent design alongside evolution.
