Old Manufacturers Learn New Tricks

The local outfit BioEnterprise, which promotes the development of bioscience companies, reports that a significant number of Ohio manufacturers are re-tooling their assembly lines to produce and distribute medical products. BioEnterprise's Baiju Shah says it's a simple bottom line decision.

SHAH: These are old-line, family run manufacturing firms, smaller firms, that have discovered that medical is both a growing industry segment, but a very profitable industry segment.

According to BioEnterprise, over 600 Ohio companies have registered with the FDA to produce medical devices. Shah says state and regional leaders can use such numbers to to sell Ohio as a place for start-up firms to make their products.
