Lack Of Political Debates Leaves Some Speechless

John Kasich’s people say the “implosion” of Ed FitzGerald’s campaign makes a debate unnecessary.

A spokeswoman for Representative Marcia Fudge says the incumbent candidate is “running on her record”, and has already shared her initiatives with the Northeast Ohio Media’ Group’s editorial board.

Dan Moulthrop, CEO of the City Club of Cleveland, laments this trend. Not only because there’ll be no direct exchange between the candidates, but because it’ll also lack audience participation.

“If you’re seeking public office, the public ought to be part of that process," says Moulthrop." There are joint appearances at editorial boards, and while those are fascinating and useful, they are not the same as a public debate.”

But political consultant Mark Weaver argues debates aren’t really necessary in the age of social media and longer campaigns.

“Remember these candidates are out and about all the time", says Weaver. "I like debates, don’t get me wrong, but this notion that it’s the 1950s again and everybody watches the same TV channels, and we all sit down around our TV to watch the same thing, it’s outdated.”
