Good morning, iOpeners. It's Thursday, August 8, 2019.

President Donald Trump’s visit to Dayton Wednesday sparked protests across the city. After landing at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, the president and first lady Melania Trump traveled to Miami Valley Hospital. There they met with survivors of last weekend’s Oregon District massacre that left nine people dead and more than two dozen others injured. They also met with hospital staff, first responders and some Ohio lawmakers and public officials. Throughout the president’s visit, a large crowd of people stood across the street chanting in protest.

Gov. Mike DeWine’s 17-point plan to address gun violence includes expanding a statewide school tip line that’s been around for years. Approximately half the educational buildings across the state, or about 2,700 school buildings, are currently registered to use the  SaferOhio tip line. The governor’s office plans to heavily promote the hotline to attract even more schools to join the program in the wake of the Aug. 4 mass shooting in Dayton.

No injuries were reported.

The Cleveland Firefighter's union is calling for the removal of Chief Angelo Cavilloover allegations he violated the city charter by circulating a petition for signatures for Mayor Frank Jackson's re-election campaign in 2017. The city says civil service employees are allowed to engage in such political activities in non-partisan races. Cleveland mayoral candidates appear without party affiliation on the ballot. The union gave Calvillo a vote of no confidence in February.
