Following recent terrorist activity overseas, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel advisory prompting airports to shore up security measures as the holiday travel season gets underway.
Fred Szabo is the interim director for Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport. He says security personnel are working, both front and center as well as behind the scenes.
“We’re continually in contact with the Homeland Security intelligence groups, and any information that’s relevant to aviation, is shared with us. And we have multilayered security plan here at Hopkins and other domestic airports and any information we’re getting we’re acting on, and ensuring that we have a safe environment.”
The state department’s alert is in effect through February. Officials say intelligence indicates that militant groups wish to carry out further attacks across the globe.
Szabo says there is no imminent threat to Northeast Ohio at this time. Travelers are advised to arrive two hours before their flight departs and to print out boarding passes ahead of time.
