Your candidates:
- Boomer, the 12-year-old dog belonging to a patient at a rehabilitation center in Rome, N.Y. The dog ended up at a local animal shelter, to the distress of the owner. The owner’s nurse searched local shelters, found the dog, filled out the adoption papers, and now takes the dog to work with her so the owner can have the comfort of his pet;
- The 497 parakeets, all now housed in shelters in the Detroit area, who will be candidates for adoption Jan. 23, after being surrendered by a man whose attempted breeding of a few parakeets “got out of control”;
- The unnamed dog who became stranded on an overpass ledge over Interstate 105 in Southern California, and who was rescued by a member of the El Segundo Fire Department. The firefighter scaled a ladder to rescue the dog, and received a few bites as he descended the ladder with the dog;
- The Swedish man, who moved to Thailand to open a restaurant, but who later started an animal shelter to care for the area’s many stray dogs who ate his restaurant's food scraps. He added a clinic with on-site veterinarians to provide free services for pets in the area plus the shelter dogs. His shelter has rescued over 1,000 dogs, and currently cares for 27 paralyzed dogs, some of whom enjoy restored mobility due to the shelter’s specialized care.
