Almanac

May 24

1781 Louis-François Dauprat – French composer, horn player, and professor at the Paris Conservatory (d.1868).

1803 first performance of Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9 'Kreutzer' in Vienna; the composer was at the piano and with him on stage was George Bridgetower, the Afro-Polish-born virtuoso violinist; the work is known for its demanding violin part, unusual length (a typical performance lasts about 40 minutes), and emotional scope.

1899 premiere of Jules Massenet's Cendrillon (Cinderella) in Paris; there was a production at the Cleveland Institute of Music in November 2011.

1911 first performance of Elgar's Symphony No. 2 at the London Festival with the Queen's Hall Orchestra conducted by the composer, who called the work a “passionate pilgrimage of the soul."

1918 premiere of Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle at the Budapest Opera; for many reasons, staged performances are a comparative rarity; it more often appears in concert form.

1930 Hans-Martin Linde – German-born, Swiss recorder player, conductor and author (89 years old).
