Program Guide 12-02-2017

December 2

1866 Harry T. Burleigh – African-American classical composer, arranger, and professional singer (d.1949); the first black composer who helped develop a characteristically American music and made black music available to classically trained artists by introducing them to the music and by arranging the music in a more classical form.

1877 premiere (in a German translation) of Camille Saint-Saëns's opera Samson and Dalila in Weimar; adaptation of the story found in Chapter 16 of the Book of Judges includes two well-known arias sung by Dalila: Printemps qui commence and Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix.

1883 first performance of Johannes Brahms's Symphony No. 3 by the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Hans Richter; in a classic moment in the show Fawlty Towers, Basil Fawlty, when accused by his wife of "listening to that racket", responds "Racket!? That's Brahms! Brahms's third racket!"

1928 first performance of Franz Schmidt’s Symphony No. 3 in Vienna; winner of the Austrian section of the 1928 International Columbia Gramophone Competition, it enjoyed some popularity at the time, but is not much heard today.

1949 first performance (four years after the composer’s death) of Béla Bartók’s Viola Concerto—completed by Tibor Serly—with violist William Primrose and the Minneapolis Symphony, Antal Dorati conducting.
