Program Guide 04-07-2017

April 7

1724 premiere of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicolaus Church in Leipzig; this is the version most often heard today, though it was revised in 1725, 1732, and 1749.

1763 Domenico Dragonetti – Italian double-bass virtuoso and composer (d.1846); remembered today for the Dragonetti bow, which he developed throughout his life.

1786 first performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 at the Burgtheater in Vienna, with the composer as soloist.

1805 first public performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’ in Vienna; Leonard Bernstein called the first two movements of the work "perhaps the greatest two movements in all symphonic music."

1899 Robert Casadesus – French composer and pianist (d.1972); the most prominent member of a famous musical family, being the nephew of Henri Casadesus (violist/music publisher) and Marius Casadesus (violinist/composer); Robert was husband of pianist/teacher Gaby Casadesus, and father of pianist Jean Casadesus; the Cleveland International Piano Competition was begun in 1975 and originally named in honor of Robert Casadesus.

1970 Leif Ove Andsnes – Norwegian pianist (50 years old); also a Professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.
