1699 Johann Adolf Hasse baptized – German composer, singer and teacher of music (d.1783); very popular in his lifetime and a pivotal figure in the development of opera seria and 18th-century music.

1879 first performance of Antonín Dvorák’s Symphony No. 5 in Prague four years after it was written; dedicated to Hans von Bülow, in gratitude for the conductor's systematic championing of Dvorák's music.

1881 Béla Bartók – Hungarian composer and pianist (d.1945); considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century and—with Franz Liszt—Hungary's greatest composer.

1881 first performance of Antonín Dvorák’s Symphony No. 6, with Prague Philharmonic; one of the first of the composer’s large symphonic works to draw international attention; dedicated to Hans Richter, conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic.

1930 Russell Sherman – American pianist, educator and author (89 years old); made his debut in New York’s Town Hall at the age of 15.

1977 Natalie Clein – English cellist (42 years old); her commitment to the cello repertoire has included commissions and premieres of works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sir John Tavener, as well as collaborations with the dancer Carlos Acosta and writer Jeanette Winterson.
