1686 Benedetto Marcello (other possible birthdays include July 24 & August 1) – Italian composer, writer, advocate, magistrate, and teacher (d.1739); an aristocrat who also pursued musical composition, he also wrote Il teatro alla moda (1720), a satire that skewered the opera world of his time; younger brother of Alessandro Marcello.
1938 first performance of Morton Gould’s American Symphonette No. 2 at a New York Philharmonic concert at Lewisohn Stadium conducted by the composer; the second of its three movements is the familiar ‘Pavanne’.
1939 Steuart Bedford – English conductor (81 years old); particularly associated with the music of Benjamin Britten; brother of composer David Bedford.
1975 Michael Christie - American conductor (45 years old); Oberlin graduate and in 2012 first-ever Music Director of Minnesota Opera.
