Program Guide 07-23-2016

July 23

1796 Franz Berwald – Swedish violinist, composer (d.1868); generally ignored as a composer during his lifetime, he made his living as an orthopedic surgeon and later as the manager of a saw mill and glass factory.

1866 Francesco Cilea – Italian composer (d.1950); best known for his operas L'arlesiana (1897) and especially Adriana Lecouvreur (1902).

1916 Ben Weber – American composer (d.1979); used the 12-tone technique but, instead of avoiding tonality, he worked with it and created a virtuoso Romantic style; wrote his own memoirs, How I Took 63 Years to Commit Suicide, the year he died.

1928 Leon Fleisher – American pianist and conductor (92 years old); after signing an exclusive contract with Columbia Masterworks in the 1950s, had the great good fortune to come to the attention of George Szell: the rest is recording history.

1944 Maria João Pires – Portuguese/Brazilian pianist (76 years old); Gramophone magazine selected her recordings of the Chopin Nocturnes as the best version available: "I have no hesitation in declaring Maria Joao Pires...among the most eloquent master-musicians of our time" (Bryce Morrison).

1960 Susan Graham – American mezzo-soprano (60 years old); noted champion of the French song repertoire and of songs by contemporary American composers, including Ned Rorem and Lowell Liebermann.

1972 Anja Harteros – German soprano (48 years old); the first German to win the Cardiff Singer of the World competition (1999).
