Program Guide 07-16-2016
1782 premiere of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio at the Burgtheater in Vienna; Bartlett's Book of Anecdotes: “The Emperor Joseph II commissioned the creation of The Abduction from the Seraglio, but when he heard it, he complained to Mozart, 'That is too fine for my ears – there are too many notes.' Mozart replied, 'There are just as many notes as there should be'"; the authenticity of this exchange, made famous in the play and film Amadeus, is not accepted by all scholars.
1858 Eugène Ysaÿe – Belgian violinist, composer and conductor (d.1931); regarded as 'The King of the Violin', or, as Nathan Milstein put it, the 'Tsar.'
1901 Fritz Mahler – Austrian conductor and composer (d.1973); nephew of Gustav Mahler; studied composition with Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern and in 1936 emigrated to America, where he taught at the Juilliard Summer School and conducted the Erie Philharmonic and the Hartford Symphony.
1904 Goffredo Petrassi – Italian composer, conductor and teacher (d.2003); one of the most influential Italian composers of the twentieth century.
1941 Geoffrey Burgon – English composer (d.2010); best known for his television and film scores.
1948 Pinchas Zukerman – Israeli-Canadian violinist, violist, conductor (70 years old); one of the world's preeminent musicians; shared the Leventritt Prize in 1967 with violinist Kyung-Wha Chung.
1959 James MacMillan – Scottish composer and conductor (59 years old); came to the attention of the world with the BBC Scottish Symphony's premiere of The Confession of Isobel Gowdie at the BBC Proms in 1990.
