Program Guide 11-14-2015

November 14

1719 Leopold Mozart – Austrian composer, conductor, teacher, and violinist (d.1787); father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his older sister Nannerl; there are two views of Leopold as father: to Mozart biographer Maynard Solomon he was tyrannical, deceitful and possessive, but Ruth Halliwell portrays him more sympathetically, defending his sometimes controversial actions as sensible efforts to guide his wildly irresponsible son.

1774 Gaspare Spontini – Italian opera composer and conductor (d.1851); one of those musical figures who were celebrities during their lifetimes and virtually forgotten after death.

1778 Johann Nepomuk Hummel – German composer and piano virtuoso (d.1837); published A Complete Theoretical and Practical Course of Instruction on the Art of Playing the Piano Forte (1828), immediately selling thousands of copies and profoundly influencing 19th century piano technique.

1805 Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel – German pianist, composer and sister of Felix Mendelssohn (d.1847); died of complications from a stroke suffered while rehearsing her brother's oratorio, The First Walpurgis Night; Felix died less than six months later from the same cause, but not before completing his String Quartet No. 6 Op 80, written in memory of his sister.

1896 first performance of Antonín Dvorák's symphonic poem The Water Goblin in London; one of the four Dvorák tone poems inspired by A Bouquet of Folk Legends (1853) by Czech historian, poet and writer Karel Jaromír Erben.

1900 Aaron Copland – American composer, composition teacher, writer, and conductor (d.1990); PBS’s American Masters said he “…was one of the most respected American classical composers of the 20th century. By incorporating popular forms of American music such as jazz and folk into his compositions, he created pieces both exceptional and innovative. As a spokesman for the advancement of indigenous American music, Copland made great strides in liberating it from European influence.”

1935 first performance of Paul Hindemith's Der Schwanendreher (literally, ‘The Swan Turner,’ Concerto on Old Folk Songs for Viola & Small Orchestra) by the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Willem Mengelberg, with the composer as soloist.

1939 Wendy Carlos – American composer and Moog synthesizer virtuoso (78 years old); first came to prominence (as Walter Carlos) in 1968 with Switched-On Bach; wrote and performed scores for two Stanley Kubrick movies, A Clockwork Orange (1971) and The Shining (1980), and Walt Disney's Tron (1982).

1942 Natalia Gutman – Russian cellist (75 years old); student of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory; great champion of chamber music and contemporary music.
