Night and Dreams – Measha Brueggergosman, soprano and Justus Zeyen, piano. (Deutsche Grammophon: 4778101)
“Good singing, atmosphere, the exotic, and the palette cleansers,” is how she summarized the mood of this album. Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman began her career committed to the song recital and this album is the follow-up to her triumphant debut recital, released on DG in 2008. With her debut, she showed that she could act. With Night and Dreams, she wanted to show herself in pure song. In selecting these wide-ranging songs about night, love, sleep, and dreams, she says she “wanted something languid, sexy, romantic.” With precision, sensual delicacy, and improvisatory freedom, this exceptional soprano makes each note her own in this program ranging from Debussy and Poulenc, to de Falla, Warlock, Strauss, and everything inbetween.
