Akron Councilwoman pushes for dash cams on police vehicles after Walker shooting

Protests continue in Akron after the shooting of Jayland Walker [Ideastream Public Media]
Protests continue in Akron after the shooting of Jayland Walker [Ideastream Public Media]

Last month, 25 year old Jayland Walker was shot and killed by Akron police after a traffic stop, followed by a police chase, and finally a pursuit on foot.

Akron police maintain that Walker fired a shot from his car. But he was unarmed when he was shot and killed by police.

Calls for police reform have been fierce over the past 3 weeks - and tensions between protestors and city officials have also been high.

Two of the recent calls for reform to get some attention include equipping police vehicles with dash cams, as well as implementing a civilian review board to monitor complaints against the police department, much like what is in place in Cleveland.

We'll begin the hour today discussing some of those reform concepts and seeing if they have any traction in Akron.

Councilwoman Tara Mosley from Akron's Ward 5 will be joinining us for that conversation.

Later in the program, we learn about a publishing company that got it's start here in Northeast Ohio, and now is one of the fastest growing publishers in the country.

Microcosm Publishing founder Joe Biel will be joining us from Portland to discuss it's humble beginnings, as well as a few titles coming out this summer that are tied to Cleveland.

Finally, our Drew Maziasz speaks with Nick Perry, author of one of those new books from Microcosm - "Hello, Cleveland".
