The 2020 Democratic National Convention concludes tonight with Joe Biden delivering his speech to accept the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
Last night, his running mate, Senator Kamala Harris took center stage to deliver her acceptance of the nomination to be Vice President. Harris' addition to the ticket has resonated with women but more specifically women of color. Harris' is the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants and her candidacy breaks barriers as the first Black and first Indian woman nominated to national office by a major political party.
We discuss Harris’ speech and the potential impact of the convention on prospective votere.
Next week, we will check in the GOP as the Republican National Convention takes place in Charlotte.
Candidates putting forward unfounded conspiracy theories, making baseless accusations, and hurling false charges against their opponents have almost always been part of the American political landscape, but few committed to that path with the ferocity of Joe McCarthy during the Cold War.
As we prepare for what is sure to be a rough and tumble Presidential race, ideastream's Dan Polletta spoke to Larry Tye about his new book, which chronicles the Wisconsin senator's rise and fall and what lessons we might take away for our current times.
Tye's latest book is "Demagogue: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy".
To find out more about the book as well hear Tye's conversations with Dan about his books about Robert Kennedy, and Superman, see the related content below.
The Black Lives Matter movement received a groundswell of support and media coverage following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May. As a result of Floyd's death and the attention it refocused on police treatment of minorities, the symbolic, silent protest of athletes "taking a knee" during the national anthem received new attention and support.
The issue divides public opinion and it can pit fans against favorite athletes and each other.
The Browns owners, Jimmy and Dee Haslam have recently said they support any player’s decision to kneel during the national anthem--a statement that has riled some fans. We discuss the team leadership’s decision and the reaction it has raised.
