New Ideas for Public Education

Governor Strickland has recently begun a 12-stop conversation tourof the state to gather ideas about education reform, but there are lots of ideas outside of Ohio that may be worth thinking about. Consider Edmonton, Alberta, where principals now have control over some 90 percent of their budget. There's also Washington, D.C., where a new chancellor is offering to pay teachers six figure salariesif they give up seniority and tenure. And though it's not a new idea, an extended school day and longer school year is gaining new currency.
