Jared Bendis: The Year in Tech 2016

Dan Polletta looks back on the year in technology news with Jared Bendis of Case Western Reserve University, who shares his top tech stories of 2016:

Fake News

"You'd think we wouldn't be so gullible.  We're still talking about the news agencies but we're not holding the mirror up to our own digital gullibility.  I think this is going to be the tip of the iceberg."

Crowd-funding Hardware Delays

"As users are we willing to sign up, are we willing to buy an item and then wait and wait and wait for it to come out or never come out?  Some of these kickstarters just disappear with your money."

FAA Drone Regulation

"Now we're seeing this even bigger explosion of drones but we're not seeing the labeling we thought we'd see.  Like the labels would say, 'This [drone] does not require FAA registration.'  We're not having that conversation, which is weird."

"It's not dead but it's definitely not for you and me...it's not the future of retail as we see it right now... the people who use bitcoin are very involved in bitcoin."

Virtual Reality

"It's not just the [inexpensive] headsets. We're looking at the way to capture full panoramic video, the 360 video.  We were looking at just a few cameras a few years ago, now we're looking at tons of [VR] cameras."

Old Emails Can Haunt You

"There is this sense of privacy to our electronic communication which just shouldn't exist."

Samsung Galaxy Phone Explosions

"They're pushing out an update for that phone and that update will turn off the charging circuit.  So [Samsung] is saying 'we've recalled the phone, you're supposed to turn it in' and if you haven't turned it in they're going to make it so the phone will wither and die."

Pokemon Go

"I want to say Pokemon Go is Pokemon Gone but it's not... Pokemon has some major announcements coming."
