Penguin Watch

Monday was World Penguin Day... And as if you need another reason to look at pictures of the cute creatures, scientists in Britain and Australia are asking the public to do just that. Penguin researchers set up dozens of cameras across Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands to monitor penguin colonies and document how things like climate change and pollution could be affecting the penguin population.

But now there's just too many images to go through -- and that's where you come in. Dubbed ‘penguin watch', users can help by counting and marking penguins, eggs, and any other photobombing animals in each picture on the project's website.

Researchers have even encouraged school groups to register and monitor a specific colony of penguins. With the public's help marking the images, scientists hope to learn more about the threats to the penguin population.
