Strong Earthquakes Strike Japan, Ecuador

In southern Japan, search and rescue efforts continue following two deadly earthquakes - two days apart. At least 43 people were killed, and more than 1,000 were injured after a 6.5 magnitude quake struck on Thursday. A larger, 7.0 magnitude quake hit Japan Saturday.

In Ecuador, an earthquake that hit the region was even larger and caused widespread damage. The magnitude 7.8 quake struck near the coast, rattling Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil.

This was the deadliest earthquake to hit Ecuador in almost 30 years. It's reported so far, that more than 400 people have died.

Authorities have deployed thousands of soldiers and police officers to affected areas, but many highways are in bad shape. And some of the victims lived in remote areas - and that is complicating rescue efforts.
