Over the last few months, we've told you about Zika – a virus spread primarily through mosquito bites that has mostly affected countries in South America. The hardest hit countries have been fighting back with campaigns to inform the public and stop the spread of the virus. Recently, the world health organization has enlisted a familiar face to join the fight -- and perhaps Zika has met its match!
Elmo, the furry red monster from Sesame Street, and his friend Raya have been appearing in public service announcements in Latin America and the Caribbean. Their job is to educate kids and families about stopping mosquito-borne illnesses like Zika. The PSA's include tips for avoiding mosquito bites and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds.
The spots also aired on "Plaza Sésamo" -- that's the Latin American version of Sesame Street. I bet you didn't know Elmo spoke Spanish!
