Speaking of boats, the United Kingdom’s National Environment Research Council or NERC -- is finding out just how creative internet users can be; when asked for feedback. A poll seeking names for a new, state-of-the-art, $300 million polar research ship has gotten some very colorful suggestions.
The ice-breaker is the largest and most advanced British research vessel ever. Officials requested inspirational names, like a historical figure or landmark but the favorite name among voters - garnering more than 26-thousand votes - is the RRS Boaty McBoatface...submitted by user James Hand.
In a distant second place, with roughly 3,000 votes, is the RRS Henry Worsley, in honor of the explorer who died in January attempting a solo trek across the Antarctic. Other suggestions include RRS Usain Boat, referencing sprinter Usain Bolt… the RRS Whale of a Time... And the RSS Boatimus Prime.
But, the good news is officials don't actually have to pick the name with the most votes. The vessel is scheduled to set sail for Antarctica in 2019.
