Before his historic trip to Cuba, President Obama named his choice to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Saying it's one of the most serious parts of his job, President Obama introduced Merrick Garland as his nominee for the open spot on the Supreme Court.
Garland is currently the chief judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit.
This is Obama's third nomination to the high court. Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan were confirmed in 2009 and 2010. But this will likely be a long political fight, since senate Republicans have vowed to block any replacement for Justice Scalia. They believe the next president should nominate the next justice.
