To Seoul, South Korea now -- where protests take on a bit of a different look. Protesters gathered in the South Korean capital in a show of support for free speech and assembly -- but in the virtual form.
The group called Amnesty International requested to hold a rally with human protesters, but they were rejected. So instead, they recorded 120 volunteers and activists marching and chanting on a green screen in a film studio and then projected those images as holograms.
A hologram is a three-dimensional picture made by a complex pattern of light.
The group says more and more protests have been banned in South Korea, a sign of further restriction on freedom of expression. A virtual protest was staged last year in Spain, but the group hopes for more human protests in the future, stating that “assembly is a human right.”
