In Japan, a volcano eruption puts on a spectacular show -- with the added element of lightning!
This is the Sakurajima volcano, located in the city of Kagoshima in southwest Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the volcano's eruption spewed heavy ash and cinder more than a half a mile from the crater. Alerts were issued, and no one was hurt during the eruption.
Mount Sakurajima is known for lightning during its eruptions because of its status as a 'highly active volcano'. Between January and September of last year, there were around 700 explosive eruptions.
Japan has 110 active volcanos. The country sits along the edge of the 'ring of fire', which is an area where a large number of volcanoes and earthquakes occur.
