Voters in Taiwan celebrate a historic election, as Tsai Ing-Wen becomes the first female president in that country's history. Taiwan is an island nation, located east of China. China and Taiwan, officially the People's Republic of China and The Republic of China separated in 1949 following the communist victory on the mainland in the civil war.
The two sides have been governed separately since then. Taiwan’s democracy is vastly different from China's one-party state and it's a young democracy. 2016 marks just 20 years since Taiwan elected its first president.
The newly elected Tsai Ing-Wen actually attended school here in the U.S. She graduated with a law degree from Cornell University in New York state. Tsai will face big challenges in her new role - one being the economy. A large number of Taiwanese youth have trouble finding jobs.
