Happy New Year and happy Fiesta Bowl win to my fellow Buckeye fans out there.
Fiesta is the Spanish word for "party" and the Ohio State Buckeyes had a lot to celebrate in their 44-28 win over Notre Dame in the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day in Glendale, Arizona.
Ezekiel Elliott, playing in his last college game before heading to the NFL, was so happy about the win that he kissed the trophy and then held it up high for all to see. His teammate, quarterback J.T. Barrett was named the game's MVP.
Joshua Perry, a senior linebacker for the scarlet and grey, should also get a mention. He was named to the Allstate Good Works Team, which recognizes college athletes who are going above and beyond to give back in their community. He's the first Buckeye to be named to the good works team in its 24 year history.
Job well done to Perry and the Buckeyes. Thanks for making my New Year an extra happy one.
Moving north to Cleveland now, efforts to increase Cleveland’s urban forest canopy are getting a boost from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The agency's Environmental Education Fund awarded a grant of nearly $42,000 to the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Holden Arboretum and other local partners to teach area residents how to properly plant and care for trees.
The intent is to improve the density of trees and woody plants that can benefit both people and the environment. The EPA said in announcing the grant that trees help lower temperatures by providing shade. They also filter pollution, reduce storm water runoff, increase property values and enhance wildlife habitat.
The grant was one of seven awarded statewide.
And finally, let's fly westward to Dayton shall we. A jet that transported American prisoners of war to U.S. soil during the Vietnam War has moved to a new hangar at the national museum of the U.S. Air Force. The U.S. Air Force C-141 Starlifter, dubbed the "Hanoi taxi", was rolled into a new hangar at the Dayton museum last month.
Museum visitors will be able to walk inside the cargo bay through a rear ramp door to better understand how airmen did their job. Instructional Links
