Rescue and Relief Efforts Underway in Chennai, India

India is stepping up rescue and relief efforts in the flooded city of Chennai.

Chennai is located on the southeastern coast of India, along the Bay of Bengal. Government officials there have been accused of being slow to take action after the area was hit with the heaviest rain in a century.

On the first day of December alone, Chennai received more than 12 inches of rain. Now that floodwaters are finally receding in the city, which is home to over four million people, soldiers and emergency workers are rushing in clean drinking water, medical supplies and food. And they're still working to rescue many who are stranded on upper floors and roof-tops.

Chennai's international airport has re-opened, which should help the country receive donated items from other nations.
