Buckeye Beat

Here in the buckeye state and all over the country this week, Americans are honoring our veterans. For me, that means I make a call home to my grandpa who served in the marines. Many of you might know someone who served as well.

In honor of Veterans Day, twenty new members are being inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in honor of their service to the community after serving in the military. The latest class joins 478 others veterans who are already in the hall of fame.

The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame was established in 1992 to recognize the post-military achievements of veterans in community service after their military service ended.

This week also marks the 40th anniversary of the day the Edmund Fitzgerald freighter sank during a ferocious storm on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald, nicknamed the “Mighty Fitz” or “Big Fitz” was 729 feet long and was one of the largest merchant ships when it originally entered service back in the late 1950s.

Fitzgerald left port on November 9 th, 1975, making its way northeast toward Lake Superior when Mother Nature struck. The Edmund Fitzgerald was later found in Canadian waters, where it had broken into two pieces.

Sadly, all 29 crew members lost their lives, many of whom were from Ohio.

And finally, officials in a Dayton suburb want to make it legal for someone to break into a locked car to rescue a pet in extreme weather conditions. The city council in Beavercreek says if passed, it would be among the first laws of its kind in Ohio.

A city councilman suggested the law after reading a news story about a man who was criminally charged for breaking a vehicle window to rescue a dog. For the rescuer to be immune from prosecution, the animal in the locked vehicle must be in danger of suffering harm, the citizen's action must be reasonable, and police must have been contacted.

If approved, the law could go into effect as early as January.
