History is made at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Observers cheered as the Palestinian flag was raised outside UN headquarters for the first time ever.
The United Nations is an international organization formed to promote security and cooperation.
The Palestinian flag joins more than 190 other flags flying outside the building. The UN General Assembly voted earlier this month to add both the Palestinian and Vatican flags to the assembly. They are the first flags from non-member observer nations to be officially flown at the UN.
Supporters say the flag-raising will help the Palestinians strengthen their presence in global affairs. Israel and the U.S. opposed the move, saying it will not bring middle east peace any closer to reality.
