Buckeye Beat

Time now to check in on what's making headlines across the state... let's get it started on this very first edition of Buckeye Beat!

In Cleveland, the environmental community celebrates some success after a three inch walleye was caught in the Cuyahoga River, about 10 miles south of Lake Erie. Millions of walleye live in Lake Erie and are part of a $1 billion-a-year sport fishing business. But the fish is almost never found in the river once known as one of the most-polluted in the country.

Officials say the success of efforts to clean the river since a fire 45 years ago can be measured by the fish found there. The executive director of Cuyahoga River Restoration says, the river will keep improving, once smaller young fish get a habitat to grow in.

History was made on the football field this month, when a senior at Kent State kicked an extra point, in a game the Flashes won. What made it so memorable was that the kicker was April Goss... only the second woman ever to score in a division one football game. Goss has been a team reserve for several years and coach Paul Haynes promised he would get her into a game this season - but no one expected it so soon.

To make sure everybody noticed, the coach sent in the regular kicker first, then called time out and had April run on the field to replace him. Her teammates surrounded her afterward and carried number 91 off the field where she was buried with hugs.

The coach calls April a great student and a great ambassador for Kent State.

In Akron, students are going to have to get to football games earlier this year - to have enough time to be tested before they get inside the stadium. Catholic high school St. Vincent St. Mary will randomly test students as they arrive to see if they've been drinking alcohol. Despite no evidence of drinking before games in the past, the school wants students to know they are enforcing the rules... and anyone who does get caught will face a suspension from the school.

The school president said about one of every eight people was tested last week with no violations.
