Coast Guard Rescues Australian Fishing Boat Near Antarctica

Many of us here in the U.S. are dealing with snow and ice, and it's causing lots of problems. But take a look at what happened in Antarctica.

The Antarctic ice was the scene of a dramatic rescue by the U.S. Coast Guard. Twenty seven people on an Australian fishing boat became stuck in the ice in one of the most remote places on earth, some 900 miles away from land!

The Polar Star is the only heavy icebreaker in the Coast Guard's fleet capable of operating in the deep Antarctic ice. An icebreaker is a ship or boat designed to move and navigate through ice covered waters, providing safe waterways for other boats and ships.

The cutter had to break through several miles of ice, some that run nine feet deep to reach the Australian fishing boat.
