Ohio Headlines: Great Lakes Clean Up, Auschwitz Exhibit, Special Anniversary

PRESIDENT OBAMA'S NEW BUDGET PROPOSAL COULD CUT FUNDING ON THE GREAT LAKES CLEAN UP... IF APPROVED WITH NO CHANGES BY CONGRESS.

THE PRESIDENT'S SPENDING PLAN RELEASED MONDAY ASKS FOR $250 MILLION FOR THE GREAT LAKES RESTORATION INITIATIVE. THAT'S DOWN FROM $300 MILLION APPROPRIATED FOR PREVIOUS YEARS.

THE PROGRAM PAYS FOR TOXIC-POLLUTION CLEANUP, RESTORATION OF FISH AND WILDLIFE HABITATS, AND REDUCTION OF OTHER HARM -- INCLUDING RUNOFF FROM FARMS AND CITIES THAT CAN CAUSE ALGAL BLOOMS, TO INVASIVE SPECIES THAT THREATEN THE ECOSYSTEM'S NATURAL BALANCE.

OHIO DEMOCRATIC SENATOR SHERROD BROWN SAYS NOW ISN'T THE TIME TO CUT MONEY THAT GOES TOWARD IMPROVING WATER QUALITY IN THE GREAT LAKES ESPECIALLY WITH THE ALGAL BLOOMS THAT LED TO DRINKING-WATER PROHIBITIONS IN THE TOLEDO AREA LAST SUMMER.

AN EXHIBIT OPENING AT THE FREEDOM CENTER AND CINCINNATI MUSEUM COMMEMORATES THE LIBERATION OF A NOTORIOUS NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP WHERE MORE THAN 1 MILLION PRISONERS DIED DURING THE HOLOCAUST.

THE EXHIBIT, CALLED "UNLOCKING THE GATES OF AUSCHWITZ 70 YEARS LATER," IS ABOUT THE LIBERATION OF AUSCHWITZ. IT INCLUDES ARTIFACTS, PHOTOGRAPHS AND PERSONAL STORIES FROM EYEWITNESSES AND SURVIVORS OF THE CAMP RUN BY THE NAZIS IN POLAND DURING WORLD WAR II.

THE PURPOSE OF THE EXHIBIT IS TO GIVE A VOICE TO SURVIVORS AND EYEWITNESSES OF THAT TIME; AND INVITE OTHERS TO STAND UP AGAINST INJUSTICE.

LAST WEEK WE TOLD YOU ABOUT THE SPECIAL EVENT COMMEMORATING THE 29TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SHUTTLE CHALLENGER'S EXPLOSION AT THE JUDITH RESNIK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER IN AKRON.

WELL TODAY WE HAVE SOME VIDEO FROM THAT EVENT TO SHOW YOU….

THIRD GRADERS LED THE STUDENT BODY IN THE SINGING OF THE JUDY RESNIK SONG.

FIFTH GRADERS ALSO HELPED PRESENT DURING THE PROGRAM. WHAT A GREAT WAY FOR STUDENTS TO REMEMBER A GREAT OHIOAN AND AMERICAN.
