Earlier this year we brought you stories about countries that considered splitting in two: first Scotland from the United Kingdom and later Catalonia from Spain. Now a group of Californians are advocating to separate their state and become the 51st state in the union. The group rallied at the California statehouse in Sacramento late last week and presented declarations of separation from several Northern California counties.
Supporters of the movement say rural areas are under-represented in the state legislature, and that California is just too big to effectively govern. They'd like to split the state in two: the northern half would become Jefferson, and the south would remain California.
This would be the first time in 150 years a state has split in two. The last state to do so was Virginia and West Virginia in 1863.
