An important election in Scotland Thursday could change the makeup of the United Kingdom. The current UK is actually four aligned nations; England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. But voters in Scotland, which has about half the population of Ohio, could decide to become an independent nation again, after 307 years politically attached to Great Britain. Its largest cities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow will be closely watched during the vote, which pollsters say right now is about even between votes for or against staying. Scotland is home to much of the United Kingdom's wealth, as the large oil fields and its massive submarine navy base are there. Many politicians in London have been promising the Scots that they will be given more power within the larger nation if people would vote to stay in the U.K.
