A tree with deep roots in local history was cut down this morning in Lakewood. The white oak on Summit Avenue in the West Side suburb was already decades old when Moses Cleaveland arrived at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River in 1796 to begin his survey of the Western Reserve. Arborists say it was the oldest tree in Lakewood and one of the 20 oldest in the state of Ohio. ideastream’s Tim Dubravetz visited Lakewood to learn more about what the massive tree has meant to generations of residents and the safety concerns behind its removal.
