Karamu House 100th Anniversary; Near West Theatre

We celebrate the 100th anniversary of our country’s oldest African-American theater, Karamu House, with a preview of a documentary in the works about the theater’s rich history - Karamu House, More Than a Theatre - produced by local news videographer Greg Lockhart. And, Karamu Artistic Director Terrance Spivey stops by to tell us about some of the centennial productions and festivities taking place this year.

Since its inception in 1977, Near West Theatre has been a place that encourages people to find voice through theater arts. At the helm from the start has been Stephanie Morrison-Hrbeck. We present her story as shot through the lens of filmmaker Ted Sikora.

And most artists seek to conquer one art form during a career. But not John Covelli. He’s mastered two: playing piano while conducting.Terrance Spivey, Artistic Director of Karamu House
