In 2020, The Battered Women's Shelter of Summit & Medina Counties served 9,019 individuals through its various services.

Last year, The Rape Crisis Center of Summit & Medina Counties assisted 832 victims, essentially ten thousand people all told.

These two organizations work in conjunction and have been doing so under the leadership of Terri Heckman, who's worked with those groups for the past 36 years.

Last week Heckman announced her retirement as CEO of the Battered Women's Shelter and Rape Crisis Center.

On today's program, we’ll hear from Terri Heckman as we look back on her long career.

Then, we switch gears to a new book centering on famed naturalist Jane Goodall.

Looking at the headlines, it is sometimes hard to be optimistic, as we face a worsening global climate crisis, economic and political upheaval, and an unprecedented pandemic that continues to change from day to day and month to month.

But in a new book from Jane Goodall, and author Douglas Abrams, the argument is posed that 'hope' has never been more important.

" The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide For Trying Times" is a work that traces how Goodall's extraordinary life and accomplishments has instilled in her 'a fighting spirit', in the face of so much adversity.

Goodall's co-author, Douglas Abrams, who authored the bestselling 'Book of Joy' with The Dalai Llama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, structures the book through a series of long form conversations with that most famous living naturalist.
