Governor DeWine Tests Positive, Then Negative For COVID-19; Reporters Roundtable August 7, 2020

stack of newspapers

The big news Thursday was that Governor Mike DeWine tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. But then came a new story that knocked that one down the list. Governor Mike DeWine had tested negative for COVID-19.

The governor's positive result came from a rapid test adminisitered prior to a planned meeting with President Trump, who traveled to Cleveland on Thursday for a fundraiser and a speech at the Whirlpool washing machine manufacturing plant in Clyde. After his appearance in Clyde, the President traveled to The Shoreby Club in Bratenahl for a fundraiser.

Ahead in this half hour, we'll talk about the implications of the governor's positive, then negative, tests and reactions to the turbulent day for the governor and for Ohio. We'll also discuss some of the governor's recent mandates, including an order that students wear masks in school if and when they return. We'll recap the President's Day in Cleveland, too.

Later in the program we talk with Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO Eric Gordon, who will tell us about what remote learning will look like for the district's 37,000 students, and what special concerns he has for them in the weeks ahead.

On today's roundtable, ideastream's education reporter Jenny Hamel; ideastream reporter Nick Castele, and from the Ohio Public Radio and TV Statehouse News Bureau in Columbus, bureau chief Karen Kasler.
