Cleveland's Settlement Houses Continue To Assist Residents And Build Community

Map of Cleveland [shutterstock]

If you were a new arrival to Cleveland a century ago, you could get help finding housing, learning English, picking up a trade, or just meeting neighbors from your local "settlement house."

Settlement houses emerged in the late 19th century across Europe, and the services echoed the needs of the waves of immigrants entering the country - and finding themselves in ethnically diverse cities, like Cleveland.

The popularity, and the services these houses provided have changed along with the fortunes and ethnic makeup of the city of Cleveland itself.

Today, more than a dozen of those places remain. But now, they're called "neighborhood centers," and they mostly serve existing city residents.

On the program today, the leaders of two Cleveland settlement houses will join us to discuss the functions of those institutions.

We'll particularly touch on how they've aided residents during the COVID-19 crisis, and what the future holds.

Later on, Kevin Kleps, from Crain's Cleveland Business joins us for a sports update.

Three teams from Ohio have made their way into the men's NCAA tournament, but we're not through the pandemic yet, and there are plenty of complications to get through.

The Cleveland Indians are back in two weeks, we close out the conversation getting the latest on Major League Baseball's season as it prepares to get under way.
